New rules for 3×3 basketball

The International Basketball Federation published the new „Rules of the game” for 3×3 basketball, which will be applied starting the 2013 season.

The most significant change regards the ball. The use of a size 6 ball is now mandatory in both genders and throughout all categories.

Last year, a size 6 ball was used for the first time in a male competition at the FIBA 3×3 World Championship U18 in Spain, where the Romanian national team finished sixth.

Another important change regards the clearance of the ball. According to the new regulations the ball does not need to be cleared (dribbled or passed behind the arc) following a steal or a turnover.

Finally, another change will affect the substitutions which require no action from the referees or table officials. Substitutions are allowed for any team when the ball becomes dead, prior to the check-ball. The substitute can enter the game after his teammate steps off the court and establishes a physical contact with him. Substitutions can only take place behind the end line opposite the basket.
